The Essence
Ar-Rahman refers to the vast, all-encompassing mercy of Allah that surrounds all creation, regardless of their belief or actions. It is a universal compassion that sustains the existence of everything in the heavens and the earth.
In the Quran
الرَّحْمَنُ عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ
"The Most Merciful. [He] taught the Qur'an, created man. (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:1-3)"

رَبَّنَا آمَنَّا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّاحِمِينَ
